In response to an oral question in the House of Advisors on “the water situation in Morocco”, Nizar Baraka stressed that this dynamic is part of a clear roadmap, under the impetus of His Majesty King Mohammed VIwith a view to diversifying water supply sources and reduce dependence on dams and to groundwater. In this context, he mentioned the project of desalination plant has Tiznitwhose work should start towards the end of next year, with a capacity of up to 350 million m3, adding that this project will have a positive impact on the supply of drinking water to populations as well as on agricultural activity.
Furthermore, the minister recalled the measures taken to strengthen the water securitynotably the development of interconnection projects between basinsnoting that the liaison work between the Bouregreg and Oum Er-Rbia basins will begin next December, with a view to extending this project to include the connection of Oued Laou At Sebou basin.
These projects will make it possible to transfer between 1 and 1.2 billion m3 per year to the provinces suffering from a deficit, he continued, specifying that this project will be crucial not only to guarantee the supply of populations with drinking waterbut also to ensure irrigation regions of Doukkala and of Chaouiathus contributing to strengthening the Kingdom’s food security.
