Oscar Flota, known locally as Fox, was killed Saturday night on the north side of Caye Caulker. Eyewitnesses report he was struck several times with a shovel by a person known to him. Information received by News 5 alleges that the attacker is a squatter in the area who is locally linked to past criminal activity, including reported gang ties and drug dealing.
Several eyewitness accounts have been shared with police, who remained active in the area through Sunday morning.
Reports also suggest persons connected to the incident have been detained, though police have not yet issued official confirmation.
Residents say tensions in the area have been building for months, with property disputes and threats repeatedly reported to authorities.
