Luis Mejía, 35 years old, is a legend within the Uruguayan National Club. In his two stages within the club he has won important titles, however the Panamanian left his continuity in the team up in the air.
With contract until December 31, 2026Mejía in a press conference prior to the duel against Cerro Largo in the league tournament, the goalkeeper left in doubt whether he will continue another year in the Nacional.
It must be remembered that the Panamanian preferred to stay with the team for these two weeks and not respond to the call of Thomas Christiansen with the Panama team for the Asian tour, this to help the team that currently remains in the middle of the tournament table.
“I don’t know if it will be my last stage in the club or I will continue. But I want to enjoy the rest of the championship in a great way. This is the confidence that Daniel (Carreño) gives me, the group too. I am calm. Now we have to try to achieve the objectives, put Nacional where it deserves,” declared Mejía.
When asked if he is thinking about continuing one more season at Nacional, Mejía replied that at the moment it is not something he is thinking about, but rather turning around the club’s situation and achieving the objectives set at the beginning of the campaign.
“I’m not thinking about that. I want to overcome, together with the group, the situation we are in, achieve the objective which is to qualify for the Libertadores (Copa), fight for the Uruguayan championship, while we have a chance, this shirt demands that you fight until the last and if the possibility of continuing in the club is given, then welcome. It is a club that I love very much and I will always be grateful,” highlighted the Panamanian goalkeeper.
Other questions regarding the Panamanian were his half-hearted performance at the beginning of the year. Mejía is aware that his numbers were not the best, but that he took risks at the time to defend the National colors.
“I am very self-critical. In the first part of the year I was not at a high level, it is not an excuse. Many do not know, but I was injured in the first months, perhaps many people do not take it as important, I took a risk at that moment. But I am grateful to the club for the trust they have given me,” Mejía highlighted.
In 2026, Mejía has been able to score for Nacional in 26 games, four of them in the Copa Libertadores. The Panamanian, this year alone, has missed a total of 15 games, either due to injury, technical decision, rest or due to the call to the national team.
The contractual relationship between Mejía and Nacional ends in three months, so the parties will have to hurry to try to reach a renewal agreement.
