With the scrutiny process almost concluded, Senator Iván Cepeda (Historical Pact) accepted the results of the second presidential round and recognized his opponent, Abelardo de la Espriellaas the new president of Colombia.
“As a candidate of the Historical Pact and the Alliance for Life, and at this stage of the scrutiny, I have decided to accept the result that arises from said process, which ispoints out that Abelardo de la Espriella is the new president of the Republic. I do it as an act of democratic responsibility, to contribute to coexistence, peace and dialogue among Colombians. I do it because we deeply believe in democracy and we are convinced that political differences must be resolved through citizen participation,” said Cepeda.
In the same press conference in which he accepted the results, which gave De la Espriella the winner with 12.9 million votes, He extended his thanks to the 12.7 million Colombians who voted for him. He described the difference in votes with the lawyer as “extraordinarily close.”
“Less than 1% of the votes separate the candidates that participated in this race. It is the highest electoral result achieved by the progressive sectors and social movements in Colombia. This demonstrates the magnitude of the national debate that we have experienced and the enormous responsibility that we all have for the future of the country,” said Cepeda.
However, he made it clear that recognizing the results of June 21 does not mean giving up several complaints about “serious events that marked the presidential campaign.”
