The Planning Authority said that the Irrestawra Darek u l-Villaġġ scheme for the Harbour Region is now oversubscribed, following an overwhelming response shortly after its launch on Wednesday. In the first 48 hours, 727 expression of interest submissions were received.
The Harbour Region scheme carried the largest allocation ever made in this year’s edition Irrestawra Darek u l-Villaġġ, reflecting both the scale and historic significance of this region, as well as the Authority’s ongoing commitment to the protection and regeneration of Malta’s built heritage.
Once again, the strong and immediate uptake demonstrates the high level of public interest in heritage conservation and the readiness of homeowners, organisations and businesses to invest in the restoration and maintenance of properties located within Urban Conservation Areas.
Commenting on the response, the Executive Chairman of the Planning Authority, Johann Buttigieg said: “The overwhelming response to the Harbour Region scheme, which featured the largest allocation ever made under Irrestawra Darek u l-Villaġġ this year (€9m), clearly shows how strongly communities value their built heritage. This level of interest confirms that when the right support is in place, people are eager to invest in the restoration and long-term care of our historic towns and villages.”
The scheme has been following a region-by-region approach, ensuring a fair, transparent and proportionate distribution of public funds, with applications assessed strictly in the order in which they are received, in line with established procedures. The Planning Authority will be accepting expressions of interest from two additional regions, which will be opened shortly, each through separate calls under the Irrestawra Darek u l-Villaġġ scheme.
Members of the public are encouraged to continue following the Planning Authority’s official social media channels and website for timely updates and further information on upcoming regional openings. Irrestawra Darek u l-Villaġġ forms part of the Authority’s ongoing efforts to support responsible restoration, encourage heritage-led regeneration and safeguard the character of Malta’s towns and villages for present and future generations.
