A Legacy Rooted in Faith and Community
Holy Redeemer Cathedral is commemorating 175 years of the Catholic Church’s presence in Belize, marking a milestone shaped by generations of faith, education, and service.
Joining Open Your Eyes to reflect on the anniversary were Father Jeremy Zipple, a Jesuit priest, and Patricia Rosado, Assistant Local Manager of Holy Redeemer. They discussed the cathedral’s history, its connection to the Jesuit community, and the importance of preserving its legacy for future generations.
Father Zipple explained that the Jesuits first arrived in Belize in 1851, when there was little to no established Catholic presence in the country. The first Jesuit priest, French missionary Father James Eustace Duperron, came from Jamaica and helped establish Holy Redeemer, along with a church and school.
What began as a small mission eventually contributed to the growth of Catholic churches and schools throughout Belize. Father Zipple described the opportunity to be part of that history as a privilege, recognizing the generations of priests and community members who helped build the Church.
More Than a Celebration: A Continuing Mission
For Rosado, the 175-year milestone represents stability, consistency, and the strength of a Catholic community that has continued to grow across generations.
She also reflected on her personal connection to Holy Redeemer, explaining that several generations of her family have been part of the parish. She noted the role the cathedral and its school have played in shaping individuals who have gone on to serve Belize in different capacities.
The conversation also highlighted the importance of keeping the parish community active as Belize City has grown and families have moved into surrounding communities. Rosado emphasized the ongoing work to strengthen that connection, while noting the growth of the diocese, including seven seminarians currently studying to become priests.
Thanksgiving Mass to Bring the Catholic Community Together
The anniversary will be marked with a special Thanksgiving Mass on Wednesday, November 4, at Holy Redeemer Cathedral. The celebration will bring together members of the Catholic community from across the country, with the Jesuits and clergy members invited to take part.
The cathedral is also preparing a multilingual choir that brings together Spanish- and English-speaking members, while incorporating elements of the Latin liturgy to reflect the richness of Catholic tradition.
Following the Mass, attendees will be invited to continue the celebration at the parish hall, where food and drinks will provide an opportunity for fellowship and community connection.
The school will also hold its own Mass with students from the upper and middle divisions, allowing young members of the community to participate in the milestone and recognize their place in the Church’s continuing story.
Looking Ahead to the Next Generation
Beyond commemorating its history, Holy Redeemer’s 175th anniversary is an opportunity to renew its commitment to faith, service, education, and community.
As the cathedral reflects on the generations who helped establish and sustain its mission, its representatives are encouraging the public and members of the Catholic community to join in the Thanksgiving Mass and celebrate this important chapter in Belize’s religious history.
