Belize’s music community is mourning the passing of singer, songwriter and guitarist Justin Castillo, better known by his stage name J. Cas, whose musical career spanned several years and saw him perform at major local festivals and entertainment events.
Castillo was known for his soulful vocals and guitar performances, and he developed a sound that blended R&B, neo-soul, and contemporary influences with Belizean Kriol.
He performed at major events, including the Belize International Music and Food Festival in 2022 and 2023. In April 2026, he was featured in the Belize Music World Festival lineup alongside international reggae performers Skip Marley and Tarrus Riley.
Among his popular releases were Forget About Me and Streets. Through his music, Castillo established himself as part of Belize’s independent music scene, leaving behind recordings and performances that will continue to connect him with listeners.
The National Institute of Culture and History (NICH), on behalf of Culture Minister Francis Fonseca, its board and staff, extended condolences to Castillo’s family, friends and fellow musicians.
“His musical talent and contributions to Belize’s cultural landscape will be remembered and cherished,” NICH wrote.
