UPPER SURINAME – With the support of the Medical Mission (MZ), a team of health workers organized a medical day in Botopasi on Saturday. The group was led by doctor Evert Zandveld and also consisted of nurses Jayson Zandveld and Benando Doekoe, supplemented by six colleagues.
The participants, who all work at ZIJIN Rosebel Gold Mines in the medical department and come from the region, wanted to give something back to their community with this campaign. “We have no money to distribute to people, but we can contribute to their health,” said the doctor.
During the health day, measurements were taken focusing on chronic non-communicable diseases. Visitors could have their blood pressure, blood sugar, weight, height and body mass index (BMI) checked, among other things. A total of 78 people used this service.
The collected data will be shared with the Medical Mission after evaluation, as Botopasi falls within their service area. The medical equipment used was a donation from ZIJIN Rosebel and was handed over to a representative of the MZ at the end of the day.
The organization of the activity, including logistics and accommodation, was completely taken care of by the group itself. The results of the evaluation will provide direction for any follow-up projects in the area.
