The tanker named ‘Arctic Metagaz’ continues to drift at sea with more than 60 thousand tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and hundreds of tons of fuel. The ship was damaged and abandoned after the explosion on March 3, and has been moving uncontrollably since then.
Authorities’ attempts to intervene have so far failed. Finally, in the second rescue operation, the attempt was interrupted as the tow ropes broke due to bad weather conditions. This caused the ship to drift uncontrollably again.

According to experts, the real danger lies in the cargo the ship carries. LNG is an extremely flammable substance and there is a risk of explosion in the event of a possible leak or collision. It is also warned that a serious environmental disaster may occur if the ship approaches an oil platform or the shore.
The ship is currently being monitored in international waters, particularly off the coast of Libya. However, no solution has been found for the tanker since no port wants to take this risk.
The resulting picture once again reveals how serious a threat large energy carriers left uncontrolled at sea can pose. This ‘ghost ship’, which has been drifting for weeks, continues to be monitored as a growing risk for both security and the environment.
