The package for the distribution of around 200 million euros for the citizens has clashed with the MPs of the opposition and the government. According to the legislators of the ruling party, this initiative aims to help citizens in the face of inflation, and according to those in the opposition, it is intended to buy votes on the eve of the elections.
Neither the Government nor the Vetëvendosje Movement have indicated whether serious efforts will be made to examine in an accelerated procedure in the Assembly the amendments to the Law on the 2026 budget and a number of other laws, for which on Saturday the vote of 2 thirds of the deputies participating in the session was not secured.
And, representatives of the ruling party and opposition legislators exchanged accusations at a distance, as the initiative for a financial package to deal with the price crisis, foreseen in the budget changes, remained blocked.
The deputy of the Democratic League, Ermal Sadiku, has insisted that the initiative to distribute funds before the possible elections, constitutes an attempt for electoral gain.
“The problem with these ’emergency packages’ is not only the misuse of the state budget and the amateurish approach. There is no transparency: it is not shown where this money is being taken from, which budget lines are being affected and what concrete results are expected. But the essential problem for me is different. This government has been saying for 6 years that it is developing the country, fighting corruption and strengthening the state. So why, every time the elections approach, is there no need for ’emergency packages’?”, he said. Sadik.
The Assembly has two more days to elect a new president. Otherwise, it is dissolved and early elections are announced.
The deputy of Vetëvendosje, Rozeta Hajdari, said that the 122-million measure that was expected to be included in the aid package of 200 million euros, has nothing to do with the elections, but with the needs of the citizens to cope with the increase in prices.
“Prime Minister Kurti has the citizen at the epicenter, he pays attention to the citizen and does not only pay attention to projects on the asphalt, as happened earlier. And Prime Minister Kurti regardless of election or non-election, I wish that non-election together with Prime Minister Kurti he moves forward by responding to the citizens with the draft law on consumer protection, the draft law on price regulation for basic products and management packages, for supporting citizens in cases of inflation”, said Hajdari.
Before the December 28 elections, the government distributed 100 euros each to students, pensioners and children. The executive has not indicated whether the means of the aid package, which has not been passed by the Assembly, will be allocated by decision of the government cabinet.
