Grenada victorious over Cayman Islands in Concacaf W Qualifier

The Grenada Senior Women’s National Team (SWNT) delivered a spirited and well-earned 3-1 victory over the Cayman Islands on Tuesday, 14 April at the Kirani James Athletics Stadium, producing a proud home result in Group C of the 2025/26 Concacaf W Qualifiers.

Grenada recovered from an early setback to claim all three points through goals from Raquelle Mitchell (45+5’), Nia Thompson (63’), and Alexis Hypolite (87’), after Molly Kehoe had given the visitors an early lead in the 3rd minute.

The victory was a significant moment for Grenada’s women’s programme, not only because it came on home soil, but because it reflected the team’s resilience, growth, and determination in regional competition. Grenada is competing in Group C alongside Costa Rica, Guatemala, Bermuda, and Cayman Islands in the preliminary stage of the 2026 Concacaf W Championship, with only the group winner advancing to the final tournament.

Grenada showed strong character throughout the contest. After conceding early, the team settled into the match and responded with increasing confidence, finding the equaliser just before halftime and building momentum as the game progressed. The second half saw Grenada take control of key moments, with Thompson putting the home side ahead before Hypolite sealed the result late on.

“We are very proud of the team’s performance and the manner in which they responded,” said Marlon Glean, President GFA. “To earn a home victory in a Concacaf qualifier is a meaningful achievement for the programme and for the country. Just as important, this result reflects the continued progress of women’s football in Grenada. We were especially pleased to see one of our young U17 players, Alexis Hypolite, step up and score at senior level. That is exactly the kind of pathway we are working to build.”

The match also highlighted the growing strength of Grenada’s youth development pathway, with two national U17 players making notable contributions at the senior level. Alexis Hypolite, 17, marked her call-up with Grenada’s third goal in the 87th minute, while Cara Bisasor, 15, delivered an impressive performance that drew praise from both supporters and leadership. President Glean noted that Bisasor was among the most impactful players on the field and quickly emerged as a crowd favourite during the match, reflecting both her talent and composure on the senior stage. Together, their performances underscored the GFA’s continued commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for emerging players to transition into the senior national setup. In total, five players from the U17 team were called up to the Senior Women’s National Team for this match.

Head Coach Melanie Thomas praised the group for its response and application across the 90 minutes.

“The players showed tremendous effort, discipline, and belief,” said Thomas. “We did not let the early goal define the match. We stayed composed, we worked ourselves back into the game, and we were rewarded for our persistence. What we want to carry forward now is that same mentality, that same work ethic, and that same togetherness into our next match.”

The result comes within the broader context of a highly competitive Group C campaign. Concacaf confirmed ahead of the April window that Bermuda, Grenada, and Cayman Islands were no longer in contention to top the group, while Costa Rica and Guatemala remained the two teams still alive for qualification. Even so, Grenada’s victory served as a strong statement of pride and progress and provided the home crowd with a performance worthy of recognition.

Grenada will now turn its attention to its final Group C fixture, an away match against Bermuda on 18 April at the Dame Flora Duffy National Sports Centre in Hamilton. The fixture closes out Grenada’s campaign in the 2025/26 Concacaf W Qualifiers and presents another opportunity for the SWNT to build on Tuesday’s performance and finish the competition strongly.

The Grenada Football Association extends sincere thanks to all supporters, partners, sponsors, and stakeholders whose continued belief and encouragement help drive the growth of women’s football in Grenada. Tuesday’s result was a proud reminder of what this team is capable of, and the Association remains confident that the programme will continue to grow from strength to strength.
