The Government’s ordinary monthly meeting for April 2026 opened on the morning of April 27 at the Prime Minister’s Office in Vientiane, under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone.
The meeting was attended in person by Deputy Prime Ministers, government members, and the Mayor of Vientiane Capital, while provincial governors and deputy governors joined via video conference. The session aims to review key developments in April and set priority work plans for May 2026.
The meeting is being held as Party organizations, the State, and the multi-ethnic people of Laos continue implementing the resolutions of the 12th Party Congress and the 10th National Socio-Economic Development Plan. Several provinces are also convening inaugural sessions of their provincial People’s Councils.
Participants noted that the regional and international situation remains complex and unpredictable, particularly due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and other regions. These developments continue to affect the global economy and have indirect impacts on Laos, including rising costs of goods and transportation.
In response, the Government emphasized the need for timely and proactive measures to mitigate the impact on the livelihoods of citizens, civil servants, and overall socio-economic development.
During the two-day session, participants will review the April monthly report and discuss priority tasks for May. The agenda also includes regional and international developments, national defence and public security, as well as reports on accidents, fires, and incidents during the Lao New Year period.
Additional topics include progress on nationwide road rehabilitation and responses to natural disasters such as hailstorms and drought. The meeting will also address forest fires, deforestation, slash-and-burn practices, and PM2.5 air pollution, along with proposed solutions.
Participants will further review the implementation of Order No. 40/PM on fuel management and the promotion of electric vehicles and renewable energy. Discussions will also cover measures to combat illegal mining and strengthen mineral resource management, as well as trends in exchange rates and inflation.
The meeting will consider draft strategies for capital market development for 2026–2035, with a vision to 2045, and draft decrees on land use rights withdrawal and the establishment of a fund for HIV/AIDS prevention and control.
Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone urged participants to examine all agenda items carefully and provide clear, concise, and practical recommendations to ensure effective outcomes from the meeting.
