Although the Trade Deadline may be seven weeks away, it appears the Giants are already testing the waters for a summer sale.
A source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand that San Francisco is willing to listen to offers for first baseman Rafael Devers, shortstop Willy Adames and third baseman Matt Chapman, although the club has no plans to trade its ace Logan Webb or any of its young players. The club has not confirmed the news.
The Athletic first reported Monday that the Giants “haven’t fully committed to being sellers” but had begun gauging the market for some of their players. A report from ESPN’s Buster Olney later Monday specifically mentioned Devers, Adames and Chapman as players the club is willing to trade.
The Giants still have time to get back into the playoff race, but that looks uphill and they haven’t shown enough to suggest they’re close to making a strong run. San Francisco entered Tuesday with the second-worst record (29-43) in the National League, behind the Rockies.
With Webb not expected to be available, the Giants’ most sought-after trade piece this summer will likely be Venezuelan second baseman Luis Arráez, given his solid season, reasonable salary and modest prospect cost as an impending free agent.
Signed to a one-year, $12 million contract in free agency last offseason, the three-time batting champion is hitting .319 with two home runs and a .787 OPS this year. On top of that, Arráez has been one of the best defensive second basemen in the game, a notable turnaround for a player whose defense drew a lot of criticism in the past, to the point that he spent more time at first base and as a designated hitter than at second base between the 2024 and 2025 seasons.
Starter Robbie Ray is another clear trade candidate as he is another imminent free agent. But his 7.16 ERA since May 13 and expected 5.16 ERA on the year make the 34-year-old lefty a less attractive option than Arráez.
Trades involving Devers, Adames or Chapman are less likely because of the money they are still owed on their long-term contracts.
Monday marked one year since the Giants surprisingly acquired Devers and his entire remaining contract from the Red Sox. The 29-year-old, who signed a 10-year, $313.5 million extension with the Patirrojos in 2023 — a deal that runs through 2033 — has hit .235/.323/.438 (117 OPS+) with 29 home runs and 209 strikeouts in 162 games in a Giants uniform. His OPS+ this year is just 101.
Adames, 30, is in the second year of a seven-year, $182 million deal he signed with the Giants in free agency after the 2024 season. While the shortstop last season became the first player since Barry Bonds in 2004 to have a 30-homer season with the Giants, he has a .226/.305/.420 offensive line (OPS+ of 106) with San Francisco, including a 96 OPS+ in 2026.
Chapman has been the best of the expensive trio with a 119 OPS+ in 2026, although he had an OPS of just .633 through the end of May before catching fire in June (1.421 OPS). The 33-year-old veteran, a five-time Gold Glove winner at third base, will be under contract through 2030 after signing a six-year, $151 million extension with the Giants in September 2024.
