SIBU (April 14): The Flora Raya SMC 2026 celebration held at Dewan Lakis here showcased the spirit of unity, diversity and togetherness among Sibu’s multicultural community.
Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) Deputy Chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley said Hari Raya Aidilfitri is not only a celebration of joy and forgiveness, but also a reminder of the shared values that bind people across different backgrounds.
“While it carries deep religious meaning, its values are universal. Kindness, respect, and togetherness are what truly hold us together as a community, regardless of background or belief,” he said during the celebration.
He noted that this year’s “Flora Raya” theme symbolises unity in diversity, likening the community to a garden filled with different flowers.
“Malay, Cina, Iban, Melanau and others… yet when we come together, we create something greater than ourselves,” he said, adding that unity must be continuously nurtured with sincerity.
Mohammed Abdullah said the council has, since 2023, taken steps to revitalise its Hari Raya gathering as a platform to strengthen community bonds.
“Alhamdulillah, what began as a simple intention has grown into something truly meaningful, an occasion where laughter is shared, relationships are built, and unity is felt beyond words,” he said.
He expressed hope that the spirit of togetherness would endure beyond individuals or positions, stressing the importance of sustaining it for the benefit of the wider community.
At the same time, he said the Flora Raya concept also serves as a reminder of the shared responsibility to care for the environment.
“A beautiful Sibu is not just what we inherit, it is what we must protect and pass on to the next generation,” he said.
He also conveyed appreciation to the organising committee, volunteers and council staff for their efforts in ensuring the success of the event.
Among those present were Lanang MP Alice Lau Kiong Yieng, SMC chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh, and Sibu Rural District Council deputy chairman Wong Ching Yong.
