DEMONSTRATION
The oil exploration in Nunap Qeqqa (Jameson Land, ed.) near Ittoqqortoormiit will tonight be met with demonstrations. The organizer of the demonstration in Ittoqqortoormiit, Hans Brønlund, who has also called for support demonstrations in other cities, is pleased that the initiative is now supported in five cities.
In Ittoqqortoormiit are the final preparations for tonight’s demonstration at 7:00 p.m. falling into place.
Demonstrations are rare in the city, which is why the organizer and chairman of the local committee, Hans Brønlund, is excited.
– I am excited because this is the first time we are organizing a demonstration here. And it’s not just anyone we have to demonstrate against either, says Hans Brønlund on Monday morning.
He has called on other cities to back the protest, and it appears the call has been well received.
Five cities support
The organizer of the demonstration states that support markings will be held in five cities: Tasiilaq, Nuuk, Qaqortoq, Nanortalik and Narsaq.
In the Municipality of Kujalleq, Mayor Malene Vahl Rasmussen (D) has announced that support demonstrations will be held. In Qaqortoq, the participants meet at the fountain at 19:00, while in Narsaq and Nanortalik they gather at the municipal offices.
– Take Erfalasorput with, and let’s show that we want to preserve Greenland and our self-determination. Let’s stand together with Ittoqqortoormiit and show our support, says Kommune Kujalleq’s mayor, Malene Vahl Rasmussen, in a video she has shared on Facebook.
The organizer of the support march in Nuuk, Aqqalukkuluk Fontain, states on Facebook that the participants will meet at the Kûnguak Café in Nuutoqaq.
– It is about the future of our country. It is about what the next generations will inherit.
– At the event in Nuuk, the mayor will give a speech, and I will also give a speech in English, says Aqqalukkuluk Fontain in a video on Facebook.
It is the American company Greenland Energy Company, which, together with the British company 80 Mile through White Flame Energy, will explore for oil in Nunap Qeqqa.
For Hans Brønlund, who is the organizer of the demonstration in Ittoqqortoormiit, the support is a great relief.
– It gives peace of mind to be supported in this way. It’s nice not to feel alone. I am grateful for the support shown from the coast, says Hans Brønlund.
The organizer of the support marking in Tasiilaq, Aron Kristiansen, states that the participants must meet in the city center in front of the municipal office.
