Everyone smells like this eventually: Experts explain how to avoid it

Getting older is an inevitable and natural part of life. As time passes, not only our skin, hair or energy; The unique smell secreted by our body also changes. This aromatic change, which is often referred to as the “odor of old age” and is usually felt on the skin or clothes of older people, is actually the product of a completely biological process. While explaining the scientific facts behind this situation, experts also give great news: A significant part of the factors that accelerate aging and trigger this odor are actually under our control.

THE MYSTERY BEHIND THE SMELL OF AGE IS SOLVED

Biologically, the main responsible for this smell is a chemical compound called “2-nonenal”. As we age, the fatty acids in our skin undergo a natural oxidation process, that is, reacting with oxygen, and this process accelerates the production of 2-nonenal. Our lifestyle directly changes our body chemistry. Our body chemistry affects everything from our energy to our cognitive abilities, our hormones, our metabolism, and ultimately our body odor.

However, there is a very critical point that needs to be considered here. You should not directly attribute every new odor you notice on yourself or someone close to aging. Sudden and sharp changes in body odor can sometimes be a sign of different underlying metabolic or health problems. Our body is in constant communication with us, and smell is one of the strongest warning signals of these communication channels.

RENEW YOUR BODY WITH PROPER NUTRITION

Although scientific research is still limited on how much diet and eating habits directly reduce the production of this compound, the most logical step is to implement a nutrition program rich in antioxidants, since the main source of odor is oxidative stress. In order to slow down this oxidation process in the body and thus prevent odor, it is necessary to color the plates with dark fruits such as blueberries and blackberries, which are rich in antioxidants, pomegranate seeds and dark green leafy vegetables.

    Add as source

In addition, sulfur-rich vegetables such as broccoli and garlic support the body’s purification mechanisms, while Omega-3 sources found in fatty fish such as salmon and mackerel protect cellular health. Consuming green tea with its high polyphenol content and using spices with proven properties such as turmeric and rosemary in meals are great steps to change body chemistry positively.

    ORDINARY SOAPS ARE NOT ENOUGH

To get rid of this smell, most people increase the frequency of bathing or turn to heavily perfumed cleansers. However, unfortunately, ordinary soaps are often inadequate in this regard. Because the 2-nonenal component, which is the source of the odor, has an oily and lipid-based structure. In other words, it clings to the skin in such a way that a standard soap bubble is not enough to completely dissolve this bond.

In recent years, persimmon-based cleansers have gained popularity for this situation. It is thought that the tannins and antioxidants found in persimmon bind to these molecules that adhere to the skin and neutralize them. However, it is important to know that research is limited and no cosmetic cleanser alone can solve the root cause of the problem.

Although cosmetic products provide instant freshness, this odor is not caused by dirt on the skin’s surface, but by the natural oxidation of the fatty acids inside. Therefore, if you want to achieve long-term and truly effective results, your focus should be on your lifestyle, not your bathroom shelf. To reduce oxidative stress at the cellular level, exercising regularly, getting a quality and deep sleep, staying away from stress and eating an antioxidant-focused diet are the most powerful weapons you have against the odor of old age.
