Asher MacLaren Timothy, affectionately known as Uncle Mac, was born on 28th April 1917, in the village of Marigot, the second child and first born son of Gustavus Timothy and Rebecca Timothy nee Lewis.
He was the last surviving sibling of his family and was pre-deceased by his two sisters, Mrs. Arabella Timothy James and Mrs Hannah Rose Timothy Thomas, and two brothers Mr. Joshua Novello Timothy and Joseph Wilkinson Timothy.
He left Dominica for Guadeloupe at a very early age {probably in his late teens/early twenties, and returned to Dominica in the late 1970’s.
He resided with his sister Arabella in Rosehill and they then moved to Sams Gutter, where he remained, until his transfer to the Dominica Infirmary by the Social Welfare Dept of the Government of Dominica .
We had always heard about Uncle Mac in Guadeloupe but actually met him for the first time on his return to Dominica, when younger family members became acquainted with him.
We do not know much about his life in Guadeloupe and do not know whether he had any children.
Uncle Mac was a gentle person, who was very intelligent and mentally alert.
He spoke French, Creole and English fluently and would astonish visitors with his ability to converse adequately.
This fluency of speech was witnessed by the nurse who assessed him on his arrival at the infirmary, much to her amazement.
He loved his red wine and rum, and would insist on a drink with his lunch.
He had a great sense of humour and would always talk about his ‘spirit’ self and tell us his ‘spirit’ name was Goy Claudinel or BB Claudinel.
He loved gardening and had to stop due to the risk of harming himself as he became older, weaker and unsteady on his feet. Uncle Mac was well loved and died with Dignity in a peaceful and clean environment.
He will be greatly missed by his family members and all who knew him.
