The decision to create the commission was announced in the Seimas on Thursday by the chairmen of the opposition liberals and conservatives Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Laurynas Kasčiūnas and the elder of the democratic faction Lukas Savickas.
The opposition raised about 20 questions, most of which were devoted to the Government’s reaction to more than 600,000 the theft of register records by using the accounts of employees of the Migration Department, and communications – after the violation was detected, the public was informed only after approximately 2 months.
The commission promises to find out who is responsible for this, why the cyber attack was not prevented and what measures are being taken to prevent it from happening again.
“We are initiating a temporary parliamentary commission on the cyber attack against Lithuania. I would call this commission the commission for the deconstruction of constant lies. We have to make sure and find out who is responsible for that lie,” said L. Kasčiūnas.
V. Čmilytė-Nielsen says that the story became public at the end of May only thanks to the efforts of the media, but until now, quite different versions of what and how really happened are heard from representatives of institutions and ruling politicians.
“Responsibility was also thrown around. But it is obvious that at some point a political decision had to be made – whether to inform the affected residents or not. We can see that the very serious security and theft crisis has become only a part of a larger crisis: both lack of information, disrespect for residents and non-compliance with the law, as well as communication”, said the chairman of the Liberal movement, reminding that I. Ruginienė took a day off and several days even after the statement of the prosecutor’s office kept silent about the situation.
“We see an inadequate reaction from both the Head of the Government and the ministers,” she added.
L. Savickas emphasized that the democrats have been trying to gather all the information as quickly as possible – the “chronology, reasons and arguments of the reaction” of the events and the Government and institutions.
According to him, several ministers and representatives of institutions both in the Seimas hall and in the democrat faction tried to answer questions, but “the more questions you ask, the more they arise, and the answers are lacking”.
