The National Customs Service of Ecuador (Senae) reported that it will adjust the limit on the entry of liquor into travelers’ luggage. Starting this Monday, May 4, passengers will be able to bring in only 3 liters of liquor without paying taxes, instead of 5 liters, which was the allowed amount.
According to the entity, the adjustment is made because this benefit was created for personal use, but it has been detected that in some cases it is being used improperly to supply informal businesses.
In 2024 alone, the entry of liquor through this mechanism reached close to 694,000 liters, evidencing sustained growth that distorts the market, according to figures provided by the Senae.
The institution recalled that the expansion from 3 to 5 liters was ordered by the previous Government and was carried out without an economic impact report to support the measure and without complying with the processes established in the current measure.
For this reason, it was indicated that said process was brought to the attention of the State Comptroller General’s Office, so that the corresponding responsibilities can be determined.
He clarified that this adjustment does not eliminate the benefit for travelers, but rather keeps it at a reasonable, technical level and in line with its original objective, said the Senae. (YO)
