The Ministry of Environment is preparing to organise National Environment Day and World Environment Day on June 5 under the theme “Zero Waste,” with a focus on tackling waste issues, particularly plastic pollution in Cambodia.
Speaking during a preparatory meeting held at the Royal Palace on April 13, Minister of Environment Eang Sophalleth said this year’s theme aligns with global efforts to address waste management challenges, especially plastic waste that threatens water, soil and human health.
The meeting was held under the presidency of Deputy Prime Minister Kuy Sophal, Minister of the Royal Palace, with the participation of relevant stakeholders.

The minister said the annual celebration aims to raise awareness among civil servants, armed forces, students and the general public to take part in environmental clean-up campaigns, tree planting and reducing plastic use, contributing to a clean, green and sustainable Cambodia.
DPM Sophal commended the Royal Government’s continued commitment to environmental protection and the conservation of natural resources for future generations.
He also highlighted the Ministry’s efforts to implement action plans that promote environmental awareness and strengthen initiatives to reduce plastic consumption nationwide.

He expressed support for hosting the 2026 event at Kandal Provincial Stadium in Ta Khmau city under the royal presidency of King Norodom Sihamoni, with the expected participation of national leaders, senior officials and the public.
Observed annually on June 5, the event reflects Cambodia’s broader environmental strategy, including efforts to achieve sustainability and carbon neutrality by 2050 under the government’s Pentagonal Strategy Phase 1.
Last year, the ministry successfully organised the event under the theme “Ending Plastic Pollution” at Morodok Techo National Stadium in Phnom Penh, attracting around 3,000 participants from across sectors.
