Major figure of the Moroccan and Arab cultural landscape, Brahim El Mazned has worked for many years as founder of Visa For Music and artistic director of the Timitar festival, to the international promotion of Moroccan and Arab music, forging lasting links between artists, festivals, professional and public networks.
“His journey testifies to a deep conviction: music is at the same time a vector of transmission, a space for dialogue and a powerful lever of cultural influence”, underlines UNESCO.
Reacting to this announcement, Brahim El Mazned affirms to receive “this distinction with deep emotion and great humility”, considering it “above all as recognition of the collective work carried out for many years in the service of culture, music and dialogue between cultures”.
“It is also an encouragement to continue, with even greater conviction, this commitment to the influence of our heritage, contemporary creation and the support of new generations of cultural actors,” he assured in a statement.
Created in 1998, the UNESCO-Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture aims to reward the work of two personalities, groups of people or state institutions who have contributed significantly to developing, making better known and disseminating Arab culture, either in the artistic, intellectual or promotional fields.
The awards ceremony for this edition will take place on June 24 at UNESCO headquarters in Paris.
