Wong presents a medal to a young athlete.
SIBU (May 1): Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh has commended the determination and sportsmanship displayed by young athletes at the Bawang Assan Zone Athletics Championship 2026, describing the event as a vital platform for shaping future generations.
Speaking at the closing ceremony yesterday, the Bawang Assan assemblyman also congratulated the organising committee for successfully hosting the championship, which involved eight schools.
The participating schools were SK Bawang Assan, SK Tanjung Bekakap, SK Sungai Lengan, SJK Keng Bang, SJK Tai Tung, SJK Boi Ing, SJK Kai Dee, and SJK Ung Nang.
“Throughout this championship, we have witnessed not only speed and strength on the track and field but also resilience, sportsmanship, and a strong fighting spirit,” he said.
“These are the values that will shape the future generation of Sarawak.”
Wong stressed that winning or losing should not be seen as the ultimate measure of success.
“What truly matters is the courage to challenge oneself, the determination to never give up, and the commitment to continuous improvement,” he said.
He added that success in sports reflects success in life, as both require discipline, hard work and teamwork.
He also expressed appreciation to teachers and coaches for their dedication in nurturing young talents, as well as to parents for their unwavering support.
“Without your commitment, today’s achievements would not have been possible,” he said, adding that parental encouragement remains a key pillar in the development of young athletes.
Emphasising the importance of grassroots sports development, Wong said school-level competitions play a crucial role in discovering and grooming future athletes.
“It is through platforms like this that we will identify talents who can one day bring pride to Sarawak and even represent Malaysia at national and international levels,” he said.
He assured that the Sarawak government will continue to prioritise youth and sports development by improving facilities and creating more opportunities for young people.
“We want our children not only to excel academically, but also to succeed in sports, be disciplined in character, and remain competitive on the global stage.”
