The United States Department of Justice reported on a meeting with the Attorney General of Guatemala, Gabriel García Luna.
He added that the Minister of the Interior of Guatemala, Marco Antonio Villeda, also participated in the meeting.
According to the information, the aim is to strengthen cooperation to dismantle human trafficking networks, combat drug trafficking cartels and bring criminals to justice.
This Thursday, June 11, the Public Ministry (MP) expanded details and reported that, during the meeting, the importance of maintaining coordinated actions to strengthen investigations was highlighted.
Also optimize control mechanisms and guarantee transparent, efficient and law-compliant processes.
He also highlighted that international cooperation is strengthened to combat organized crime, human trafficking, criminal structures and other crimes.
The Ministry of the Interior (Mingob) reported that the meeting, held at US federal offices in Washington, DC, had the purpose of consolidating bilateral collaboration and coordinating strategies to combat crime that affects both countries.
He added that, during the meeting, the authorities addressed issues related to the fight against human trafficking networks, drug trafficking and other transnational criminal structures that operate in the region.
Likewise, they analyzed mechanisms to strengthen investigation and criminal prosecution capabilities, as well as actions aimed at dismantling organizations dedicated to organized crime and bringing their members to justice.
Within the framework of the meeting, they agreed on the need to promote a new stage of cooperation between the institutions responsible for security and justice, strengthening communication channels, the exchange of information and operational coordination to respond more effectively to the threats facing the region.
According to Mingob, this shared vision seeks to consolidate a new era of joint work between Guatemala and the United States, based on mutual trust, shared responsibility and the commitment to protect the population. In addition, it will allow resources to be optimized, institutional capacities to be strengthened and the response to the challenges posed by transnational organized crime to be improved.
“With these actions, Guatemala and the United States strengthen their strategic alliances in terms of security and justice, promote the exchange of information and promote coordinated operations to dismantle criminal structures, for the benefit of the security and well-being of the population,” added Mingob.
The MP expanded that Attorney General García Luna received the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) recognition plaque, presented by the assistant director of International Operations, Ricardo Mayoral, within the framework of strengthening inter-institutional and transnational cooperation in matters of security and justice.
