The inflow of fishery products to markets in the Yangon Region has increased in April, according to U Aye Ko, Vice-Chairman of the Market Administration Committee at Shwe Padauk Fish Market in Hline Township, Yangon Region.
“This month, the volume of fish entering the market has been high on a daily basis. More than 100 truckloads arrive each day. Although supply is abundant, trading remains slow. This is because there are no export shipments abroad during this period. The increased inflow of fish this year is due to rising feed prices and shortages of raw materials. In addition, to prevent fish losses caused by the April heat, farmers are harvesting their ponds and selling their stock, which has led to a continuous supply of fishery products to the market,” said U Aye Ko.
In Yangon, freshwater and marine products from Shwe Padauk Fish Market in Hline Township and Sanpya Fish Market in Kyimyindine Township are distributed to upper and lower parts of Myanmar, as well as to border areas with good transport links. At present, due to the early harvesting of fish ponds ahead of the summer season, freshwater products from the Ayeyawady, Yangon and Bago regions are continuously flowing into Shwe Padauk Fish Market.
More than 350,000 viss of freshwater fish enter Shwe Padauk Fish Market daily, including over 30 varieties such as rohu, carp, butter fish, pomfret, snakehead, catfish, small catfish and seabass. — ASH/KNN
