Veteran Nationalist Party MP Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici is the latest sitting MP to announce that he will not be seeking re-election later this month.
“Every beginning has its end. After a lot of thinking and reflection, I have decided not to contest for the upcoming general election,” Mifsud Bonnici said in a short video message on social media.
Mifsud Bonnici has served in Parliament for 28 years, having first been elected in 1998. He has been elected every time since, contesting on districts in the south of the island.
In 2022, he was elected via a casual election on the 3rd electoral district.
“The time has come for others to come in and continue to serve instead of me and for them build on the good that I will leave behind me,” Mifsud Bonnici said as he thanked voters and followers for supporting him over the past years.
Mifsud Bonnici is the latest in a growing list of sitting MPs who will not be seeking to extend their term in Parliament later this month.
PN MPs David Agius, Claudette Buttigieg, Ryan Callus, Ivan J. Bartolo, Robert Cutajar, Chris Said, and Karol Aquilina are all not seeking re-election, while PL MPs Aaron Farrugia, Michael Farrugia, Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, Chris Agius, Clayton Bartolo, and Roderick Galdes will also not be on the ballot sheet.
