The France Pavilion at SIEL: a living laboratory of literary creation

Rabat is no longer content with being the “City of Lights” of Morocco; it becomes, for the year 2026-2027, World Book Capital designated by UNESCO. It is in this context of consecration that the International publishing and book fair (SIEL) opens its 31st edition, from May 1 to 10. With France as guest of honor, echoing Morocco’s invitation to Paris Book Festival in 2025, the Pavilion France establishes itself as a space for abundant dialogue where programming abandons nostalgia to embrace the vitality of contemporary creation.

    Icons and social phenomena

The event is marked by the exceptional arrival ofAnnie Ernaux, Nobel Prize for Literature 2022. The writer will open this participation with a meeting followed by a signing session, on May 1 at 5:30 p.m. in the Ibn Battuta room, before a major interview led by young readers on May 2 at 5 p.m. in the Fatima Al-Fihriya room. At her side, the new literary guard asserts itself with Morgane Moncomble, New Romance phenomenon and second most read author in France in 2025. She will explore the link between influence and reading on May 2 at 2:30 p.m. in the Avicenne room, before dedicating his success “La Révolte de la Reine” on May 3 at the France Pavilion.

Youth: between heritage and digital immersion

Young people are not only an audience, they constitute the beating heart of French programming. Timothée de Fombelle, a major author of children’s literature whose stories, like Tobie Lolness, have won over generations of readers around the world, will be present from May 6 to 10 for a series of dialogues and a musical reading around his work “La Vie Entire”.

Technological innovation is also present through the “Floating Cities” exhibition, installed at the media library of the French Institute in Rabat. Co-produced by Cécile Palusinski and Elsa Mroziewicz, this augmented reality creation offers an immersion at the intersection of poetry and visual technologies. The public explores cities built on water through an interactive journey combining animations, sound creations and testimonies. Younger children will also be able to draw inspiration from it during a dedicated workshop, scheduled for May 3 at 2 p.m.

Emerging talent will also be highlighted with the Youth Comics Competition. After several months of support, seven young Moroccan hopefuls will see their journey crowned by the proclamation of the winner on May 1 at 2 p.m. in the Fatima Al-Fihriya room. Their boards will be displayed on the stand, where visitors will be invited to vote for their favorite work. nA dialogue beyond the pages: cinema and music

The spirit of SIEL escapes the walls to take over the city with a major “Outside the Walls” program:

Les Lumières du SIEL: at the 7th Art Cinema, directors like Michel Ocelot (May 3 for “The Pharaoh, the Savage and the Princess”) and Valérie Donzelli (May 7 for “À pied d’oeuvre”) will extend the literary experience on the big screen.

Musical stage: the Franco-Moroccan phenomenon Ino Casablanca, nominated for the Victoires de la Musique 2026, will take over the stage of the Cinéma Renaissance on May 2 at 9:30 p.m. for a concert mixing Arabic and French. On May 9, Café La Scène will host a poetic DJ set combining texts and soundscapes.

    Youth workshops and key events

    • Creation of comic strips: for ages 9 and over (May 1, 10 a.m.).

    • Writing haikus: to the rhythm of the waves with Cécile Palusinski (May 7, 2 p.m.).

    • Sound fiction workshop: for 15-19 year olds at the IFM media library (May 5, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.).
