It started with a visit to the U.S.
On September 3 last year, Karol Nawrocki met with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington. It was the president’s first foreign visit after taking office. What did the politicians discuss? As Niezależna.pl has learned, the release of Poczobut was also on the agenda. From that moment, the issue became a permanent topic in talks between Poland and the United States.
“The Americans declared their support, and later we took further steps while remaining in constant contact,” one person familiar with the talks told the portal.
“Donald Trump promised help on September 3. After the presidents’ conversation, American services were tasked with acting to secure Poczobut’s release. That’s when everything started moving,” the source claims. According to Niezależna.pl, since September 3 the case of the opposition activist has been handled by presidential minister Marcin Przydacz.
President Karol Nawrocki emphasized during a press conference on Wednesday that the process of securing Poczobut’s release was long, but has now been completed. He noted that it involved contacts with the United States.
“The release process was very long; it was strengthened by my conversation with Donald Trump – I asked that the President of the United States not forget about the Pole who is in a Belarusian prison and that he raise this issue,” the head of state added.
Nawrocki also said that he learned about Poczobut’s release yesterday during a conversation with John Coale, the special envoy of U.S. President Donald Trump for Belarus.
