By a decision dated April 27, 2026, the President of the Republic of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, posthumously awarded the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta to the tragically deceased Member of Parliament, Łukasz Karol Litewka, as announced by the President’s spokesperson, Rafał Leśkiewicz.
Tragic death
Łukasz Litewka, a 36-year-old MP from New Left (Lewica) representing Sosnowiec, died tragically last Thursday afternoon while cycling. He was struck by a car on Kazimierzowska Street in Dąbrowa Górnicza.
Łukasz Litewka was known for his charitable and community work. His #TeamLitewka foundation, among other things, used social media to raise awareness and support treatment for children and the rescue of animals; it also responded to difficult situations in the local community, raised funds for rehabilitation equipment, and provided assistance to accident victims.
Court decision
The District Court in Dąbrowa Górnicza decided on Saturday to impose a three-month pre-trial detention on the 57-year-old suspect accused of causing the accident in which MP Łukasz Litewka was killed.
The court’s decision is conditional, meaning the suspect may leave detention if, within 14 days of the ruling, he posts bail of 40,000 PLN. If the specified amount is paid, the custodial preventive measure will be lifted, and the man will be placed under police supervision, including the obligation to report to the appropriate unit and a ban on leaving the country.
According to the prosecutor, one of the key issues under investigation is whether the suspect was using a mobile phone at the time of the incident. The device has been secured and sent to experts.
During a press conference on Friday evening, the spokesperson stated that the suspect is being charged under Article 177 of the Criminal Code – causing a fatal traffic accident. This offense carries a penalty of between six months and eight years of imprisonment. “The charge brought against this man emphasizes that he unintentionally violated road traffic rules and also unintentionally caused the death of MP Litewka,” the prosecutor said.
State funeral
The funeral of Łukasz Litewka will take place this Wednesday in Sosnowiec at 1:30 p.m. and will have the character of a state ceremony, as announced by the Mayor of Sosnowiec, Arkadiusz Chęciński. Part of the ceremony, however, will remain strictly private.
