British authorities have launched an investigation after a major fire broke out at Fairford airbase in Gloucestershire. It is currently home to American B-52 bombers, involved in the recent operations in Iran.
The fire was reported in the early hours of the morning, around 01:52, at an industrial storage building located on the perimeter of the base. Images captured at the scene show violent flames engulfing the structure, but emergency services have confirmed that no one was injured in the incident.

Emergency services intervention
Crews from Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Services responded promptly, supported by ambulances and inter-agency liaison officers. The Ministry of Defense in London stated that British Air Force personnel were not directly involved in firefighting activities.
An Air Force spokesman of the US stated that “the fire has been contained and no longer poses a risk to those on base or the local community. Our priority remains the safety of personnel, their families and our neighbourhoods.”

Local tensions
The Gloucestershire base has recently become a point of contention. Recently, about 200 demonstrators gathered in Fairford to protest the use of British bases by the US air force for attacks in Iran. The demonstration is also aimed at changing the position of the government led by Keir Starmer on the matter.
On the other hand, residents of the picturesque villages of the Cotswolds region have complained about the intense noise produced by the heavy bombers and the large influx of aviation enthusiasts who monitor the military activity.
The hypothesis of an accident
Although the base has been the target of recent demonstrations, early indications from investigators suggest that the source of the fire was not suspicious.
“The investigation is ongoing, but initial indications suggest that this is likely to be an accidental event,” Gloucestershire Fire Service representatives said.
RAF Fairford remains one of the most important European operations centers for the US Air Force, being used strategically for the deployment of long-range bombers in times of international conflict. Fire crews remain at the scene as a precaution to ensure the incident is fully dealt with.
