The Balkans are a dream tourist destination, being highly appreciated by Western tourists in particular. Many cities and locations from the Balkan countries have been underappreciated or simply unknown in Romania, although they are at a fairly short distance from our country.

Most Romanians are in the phase of intensive summer vacation planning. If some have already decided their summer destinations and even booked stays, those who are still undecided can turn to a tourist pearl close to our country.
It is about the Balkan Peninsula and its beautiful countries. The Balkans offer a perfect combination of spectacular Adriatic beaches, truly impressive historic cities, and breathtaking mountain scenery. Among the most important destinations are the fortified city of Dubrovnik (Croatia), the picturesque Bay of Kotor (Montenegro), the famous Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina) or the beaches of the Albanian Riviera.
In addition to these already very well-known places in the Balkans, there are still quite a few cities and tourist areas almost unknown to Romanians, but which can represent a dream destination for a vacation for two or even with the family. Here are some places in the Balkans that you should try this summer.
Himara, the hidden pearl of the Mediterranean
If you are beachgoers, but prefer picturesque, quiet places, almost untouched by mass tourism, and which, at the same time, take your breath away due to the beauty of the landscape, Himara is the answer, say many Western bloggers specializing in tourism, but also for specialized publications. Himara is a city and a region in Vlorë County in southern Albania.
It is located between the Ceraunian Mountains and the coast of the Ionian Sea in Albania and is part of the select “club” of the five Mediterranean “jewels” that have still remained untouched by tourist overcrowding. Himara offers warm weather, spectacular scenery, a rich cultural heritage and, in many cases, very affordable prices. In fact, it was classified by the American travel magazine “Travel Off Path” as one of the most beautiful destinations to visit in 2025.

Generally much underrated as a tourist destination, Albania stands out as an ideal destination for a peaceful getaway in the Mediterranean area, largely because it has not yet been affected by mass tourism.
“Along the Albanian Riviera, Himara (Himarë) awaits you with steep coastal cliffs and deep blue waters. It is a small Mediterranean town with a strong Greek influence and numerous wild olive trees dotting its hillsides. Fine white sandy beaches stretch along the coast and fishing boats float peacefully on the calm sea. Castles old and new are just a hike away, and the excellent food in the local restaurants is only surpassed by the spectacular sunset views. It’s a place where a 3-day visit can easily turn into a 13-day stay. And, in my opinion, it’s the “coolest” town on the Albanian Riviera”says Dominic of Sandal Tan Man, a well-known travel blog.
Himara has a lot of beautiful beaches. Some of these can only be reached by water, and the landscapes are truly spectacular. At the same time, you can do different optional excursions and boat tours. The old town of Himara is a place steeped in history, with fortresses and castles including from the Ottoman period. Himara is close to Dhërmi (16 kilometers), another dream destination.

Filikuri Beach is among the most spectacular places in Himara. It is a hidden treasure, accessible only by sea or on foot, without car access, and the land version is the most difficult. And that’s because the beach is surrounded by high cliffs, and the descent is steep, with unstable gravel and slippery ground. But the effort is worth it, bloggers say. “You will reach a spectacular beach with warm, translucent and blue waters. In spring and early summer it is quite possible to be completely alone there. A little further towards Dhërmi is also the Aquarium beach (Plazhi i Akuariumit), a small stretch of fine sand, surrounded by rocks that form a secluded bay, like in a pirate movie”, adds the “Sandal Tan Man”.
At the same time, Himara is also ideal for lovers of Balkan culture and history. Himara Castle is gorgeous and the road to it is actually a chain of zig zag streets and high stone walls. From the plateau of the castle you will have access to incredible panoramas.
Splendor from the heights of the mountains
If fans of azure beaches and quiet sea holidays find the ideal destination in Himara, Albania, lovers of mountain hiking and breathtaking scenery should definitely travel to the neighboring country of Montenegro. There is an incredible mountain resort that, unfortunately, few Romanians know about. It is called Žabljak and is the center of mountain tourism in Montenegro. Žabljak is a mountain town located 1456 meters above sea level, making it the highest urban settlement in the Balkans. Basically, it is located in Durmitor National Park, dominated by the mountains of the same name. It is considered a charming and relatively small town, but one that offers a wide range of interesting activities throughout the year. In winter, for example, Žabljak turns into one of the most beautiful ski resorts in Europe. But we are in the middle of spring and summer is fast approaching. Well, Žabljak offers incredible entertainment in the summer season as well. First of all, it is surrounded by natural beauty.

In addition to the imposing Durmitor Mountain, the city is adjacent to the deepest canyon in Europe, formed by the Tara River. In Durmitor National Park you will find lush forests, high mountains, lakes and crystal clear streams. In fact, the lakes and streams are among the best tourist attractions in the Durmitor National Park. There are no less than 18 glacial lakes, the largest and closest to Žabljak being Crno jezero, meaning “Black Lake”. At the same time, in the Tara river canyon, with a depth of 1300 meters, the second deepest canyon in the world, included in the UNESCO World Heritage, you can practice rafting with the whole family. The sensations are unforgettable, and the landscapes dreamy. Trails of varying difficulty allow both beginners and experienced riders to enjoy a spectacular river descent.
The rafting season lasts from April to October, and the optimal period is considered May to September. Also around the canyon, those who do not have the courage to venture on the Tara river have numerous hiking trails, suitable for all categories of tourists. The “Tara Valley Trail” deserves special attention, as it follows the course of the river and allows visiting several natural attractions.

Last but not least, for enthusiasts of mountain bikingthe slopes of Durmitor are perfect for mountain biking, while offering spectacular views. The place is also suitable for climbers, but also for those who love traditional culture. In the villages of the area you can discover traditional crafts, authentic local gastronomy, but also particularly picturesque festivals. The local cuisine reflects the mountainous character of the region. Among the traditional dishes are kajmak (a kind of milk cream), njeguški pršut (smoked and dried ham), cicvara (sorghum porridge with cheese) and the famous mountain honey. You can get to Žabljak either by private car or by bus from Podgorica (it takes about three hours). Or you can fly to Podgorica and rent a car at the airport. Accommodation is plentiful, either in 3-4 star hotels, guesthouses or campsites.
Zadar, a place of culture and history
If we have mentioned ideal places for beach lovers and mountain hikers, perhaps we should also reveal an ideal destination for those looking for a special cultural experience. And the Croatian city of Zadar is the perfect destination. Zadar is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Croatia. In conclusion, there is no shortage of historic architecture and incredible monuments. The city has, first of all, a compact and attractive old center, an artists’ paradise, with an abundance of places where you can admire artistic creations, places with a special historical charge and cultural events. Last but not least, Zadar also offers a gastronomic journey of millions, with varied and incredibly tasty local dishes. If after so much history and culture we still want to take a break and delve into the mundane, Zadar has no shortage of gorgeous beaches and fun opportunities.

Among the most beautiful monuments in Zadar is the Roman forum located on the eastern side, towards the Adriatic Sea. The building was completed in the 3rd century AD. Another monument that must be visited is the church of Saint Donatus from the 9th century, built in pre-Romanesque style. Then there is the Venetian Citadel, built in the 15th century, being the place from where you can best observe the city. In addition to all this, there are countless churches, medieval and Roman monuments to explore. Not to mention museums of all kinds, including a museum of illusions. Also in Zadar are two unique and fascinating artistic creations designed by local architect Nikola Bašić. It is about the “Sea Organ” and the “Sun Salutation”. The “Sea Organ” is a system of pipes that make sounds when the movement of waves pushes air through them. The music created by this system is soothing, almost hypnotic.
