Tomorrow falls on Thursday, the tenth of the month of Muharram, known as “Ashura Day,” and it is one of the blessed days on which the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, urged people to fast, because of the great virtue and great reward it holds.
The General Fatwa Department indicated, in a research fatwa published on its website, that the day of Ashura is the day on which God Almighty saved his Prophet Moses, peace be upon him, and his people from Pharaoh and his soldiers, so Moses fasted it in gratitude to God Almighty, then the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, fasted it when he came to Medina, and commanded Muslims to fast it.
The fatwa confirmed that it is better for a Muslim not to single out the tenth day for fasting, but rather to fast the ninth and tenth of the month of Muharram, or the tenth and eleventh, while it is considered more complete to fast three days, namely the ninth, tenth, and eleventh, following the example of what was reported from the predecessors and scholars.
She called on Muslims to seize this blessed occasion by increasing acts of obedience and worship, maintaining family ties, and acts of righteousness, because of the impact this has on consolidating the meanings of faith and strengthening Islamic values in society.
The day of Ashura represents a renewed station of faith in which Muslims recall the meanings of gratitude to God Almighty, steadfastness in the truth, and imitation of the prophets and messengers, in addition to strengthening the values of faith, obedience, and drawing closer to God by good deeds.
