Damascus, June 23 (SANA) Justice Minister Mazhar al-Wais said Syria is nearing the transfer of a new group of Syrian prisoners from Lebanon under a judicial cooperation agreement between the two countries.
Al-Wais said in a statement that the group includes 128 Syrian inmates and forms part of ongoing judicial coordination between Damascus and Beirut aimed at addressing the situation of Syrian citizens held in Lebanese prisons.
The minister said the transfer is being carried out within the framework of the judicial agreement signed between Syria and Lebanon and reflects continued cooperation between the two sides in legal matters.
He added that the Syrian authorities are working with their Lebanese counterparts to complete the necessary procedures for the transfer and ensure the implementation of the agreement in accordance with the relevant legal frameworks.
The move comes under an agreement signed by Syria and Lebanon in Beirut on Feb. 6, providing for the transfer of convicted Syrian nationals from Lebanon.
The first group of Syrian prisoners was transferred to Syria on March 17. The group included 136 prisoners who had been held in Lebanon’s Roumieh Prison and other detention facilities.
