Not twins, legend has it that they were husband and wife and were the lifeblood of the entire region.

Not twins, legend has it that they were husband and wife and were the lifeblood of the entire region.

Indonesia’s Java island, one of the most active volcanic regions in the world, started to be talked about again with photographs taken from space.

Live Science science portal, the frame showing Sundoro and Sumbing mountains taken by an astronaut working on the International Space Station (ISS) resembles a perfect reflection in a mirror when viewed from above.

There is only a few hundred meters difference

These two giant volcanoes, which are adjacent to each other, are not actually the same size, they just appear to be in balance when viewed from space.

Mount Sundoro (Left): It is located at an altitude of 3,149 meters above sea level. The mountain last erupted in 1971, and serious seismic activities were recorded in 2012.

Sumbing Mountain (Right): It reaches an altitude of 3,370 meters above sea level and is slightly higher than its twin. Its last known major eruption occurred in 1730.

The peaks of the two mountains are exactly 12 kilometers away from each other, and a very important highway, which is considered the lifeblood of the island, passes between these two giant masses.

What’s the only difference between them when viewed from space?

The giant crater left from the massive eruption of Mount Sumbing in 1730 shows itself as a black spot in space photographs. Additionally, the geographical arrangement of small parasitic volcanoes formed on the slopes during past eruptions proves why the 2 mountains appear like a “mirror reflection” when viewed from above.

The legend of the ‘married couple’ is circulating

These mountains, known all over the world as “Twin Volcanoes” due to their similar topography and colors, have a very different story among the local people. Javanese people compare these two mountains to a married couple: They consider the higher and more majestic Sumbing Mountain as the “husband” and the nearby Sundoro Mountain as the “wife”.

According to NASA Earth Observatory, although they may seem dangerous, these volcanoes give life to life around them. Agricultural lands begin right at the end of the dense green forest ring surrounding the mountains. This region has the richest volcanic soil in the world in terms of minerals; It is the center of rice, corn, coffee and sugar cane production.

The heart of the Pacific Ring of Fire: Indonesia

These twin giants are part of the massive Dieng Volcano Complex, which consists of approximately 20 volcanic peaks spread across Central Java Island. Located on the “Pacific Ring of Fire”, the world’s most dangerous earthquake and volcano belt, Indonesia is one of the countries with the most active volcanoes in the world.

Especially the recent (2024 and 2025) devastating eruptions of the Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano on Flores Island once again reminded the whole world how lively and alert the region is.
