How do you know what is lost when you don’t have the words for it? – DiePresse.com

Our vocabulary changes quietly, almost unnoticed – after a move or in a changed climate. Some vocabulary would have been nice to do without.

My vocabulary has expanded quite a bit over the past fifteen years as I moved to Eastern Austria and the big city of Vienna. In addition to the classics like Mezzanin, Tandler and Panscherl, my repertoire – thanks to nature identification apps – has also been enriched with very specific animal and plant names. I met the sand bee at the playground, I said goodbye to the schoolchild in the morning under a leather pod tree, I was amazed at the rescue of an old plane tree during the construction of the U5 and watched white-bordered bats hunting in the beam of light from the lanterns. I’m still waiting to chance upon a bee-eater with its exotic bird plumage.

The language we actively use reflects the reality we want to – or often need to – deal with. In any case, the knowledge contained in the specific vocabulary of local communities to describe their environment is enormous. But because this is decreasing rapidly, the world’s linguists have to work hard to secure it.

Anyone who talks to older or younger generations about the nature that surrounds us quickly realizes that the vocabulary used is sometimes massively different. Many children no longer learn what the difference is between a meadow and a garden, a bluebell and a foxglove, a slowworm and a smooth snake. Because adults lack this knowledge to pass on or because it simply no longer plays a role in their everyday lives. And so the eco-vocabulary atrophies from generation to generation. This is not only a sign of an increasing distance from nature in everyday life, but also of the loss of diversity.

For better or worse, we have to get used to new words. With Anthropocene and ragweed, with tiger mosquito and Asian hornet, with glacier melt, tipping point and flight shame. I suggest that, if anything, we at least focus on the really complicated ones: things like decarbonization, carbon sinking and resilience.
