Costa Rica, June 14, 2026 (SPS) – The leaders of Costa Rican parties and heads of civil society institutions renewed their support and solidarity with the Sahrawi people, their just cause, and their legitimate right to self-determination.
During their meetings with the Ambassador in charge of Latin America and the Caribbean, Mohamed Azrouk, the leaders of the parties and institutions stressed the importance of Costa Rica continuing, in fulfillment of its deep-rooted historical traditions of respecting international law and peace, and defending the right of peoples to self-determination. its destiny, and to play a positive and constructive role in order to complete the process of decolonization in Western Sahara.
They also expressed their full readiness to cooperate with Sahrawi institutions and civil society organizations in order to publicize the truth of the Sahrawi people’s struggle and anti-colonial resistance, and their legitimate aspirations for sovereignty and independence.
In the same context, the need to put an end to the systematic violations of international humanitarian law and human rights in the occupied territories of Western Sahara, as well as the ongoing plundering and exploitation of natural resources, was emphasized.
The Costa Rican representatives also highlighted the importance of expanding awareness of the Sahrawi issue in other countries of the Central American region, and strengthening networks of solidarity and cooperation between peoples.
At the conclusion of the meetings, the participants unanimously agreed on the responsibility placed on the United Nations regarding the continuation of a colonial situation that has not yet been settled in Western Sahara, and on the necessity of mobilizing the commitment of states and governments to contribute to completing the process of decolonization of Western Sahara.
They also reaffirmed that the international community is required to ensure the necessary conditions that enable the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to determine their future in full freedom, democracy and transparency, in accordance with the relevant principles and resolutions of the United Nations.
