President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova says that in the past we have often preferred constitutional relativism and even constitutional nihilism, referring to the request from the negotiation framework to include Bulgarians in the Constitution.
In an interview with MIA, she says that we should stand for constitutional patriotism.
“We treat the law of laws inappropriately. Evidence? It’s 36 amendments, most of them initiated from outside. The question now is whether, when changing the Constitution, we kept in mind that sovereignty springs from the citizens and belongs to them, because usually all preambles express this with the first sentence of the preamble ‘We, the people…’ etc., ‘We, the people and the international community’ or ‘We, the people and the European Union’, or… I belong to the group of constitutionalists who, when they read the fundamental sources or the constitutional sources of the European Union, read them not only through the eyes of the EU members, but also through the eyes of the candidates, they believe that they should be Europeanized to open chapters, clusters or already have a European capacity when they enter,” she says.
The president emphasizes:
“Leave us to Europeanize on the way, to become compatible with what the Copenhagen criteria require. How? Not wasting time solving historical issues, because they are excluded from the identity, from the constitutive acts of the EU, through the article that national and cultural identity would be respected, and to concentrate on Europeanization.”
