In a letter to the Security Council: The Polisario Front strongly condemns Moroccan criminal acts against Sahrawi civilians

New York (United Nations), June 11, 2026 (SPS) – Today, Dr. Sidi Mohamed Ammar, member of the National Secretariat and representative of the Polisario Front to the United Nations and coordinator with MINURSO, sent a letter to Ambassador Leonor Zalapata Torres, Permanent Representative of Colombia to the United Nations and current President of the UN Security Council, in which he expressed the Polisario Front’s strong condemnation of the recent Moroccan criminal acts targeting Sahrawi civilians.

The following is the full text of the letter, a copy of which was received by the Sahrawi News Agency (SAS):

    New York, June 11, 2026

Her Excellency Mrs. Leonor Zalapata Torres,

Permanent Representative of Colombia to the United Nations

    President of the Security Council

    Your Excellency the Ambassador,

Firstly, I would like to congratulate you on assuming the presidency of the Security Council for the month of June, and I wish you every success in your mission.

I write to you with deep concern to urgently draw your attention and the attention of the members of the Security Council to the ongoing crimes committed by the Moroccan occupation forces against Sahrawi civilians in Western Sahara.

On the morning of June 5, 2026, the occupying Moroccan forces launched an attack on a group of Sahrawi civilians using drones and long-range artillery. The attack, which took place in the Kulaibat al-Fula region in Western Sahara, resulted in the complete destruction of civilian vehicles and severe material damage. The investigation team of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) visited the site and conducted an investigation into the attack.
The Polisario Front strongly condemns the recent criminal acts targeting Sahrawi civilians, which reflect the same methods used by the Moroccan occupation forces in their war of aggression against the Sahrawi people.
Since violating the ceasefire on November 13, 2020, the occupying Moroccan forces have been using all types of lethal weapons, including drones, to deliberately kill dozens of innocent civilians, not only from Western Sahara, but also from Algeria, Mauritania, and citizens of other countries as they pass through the liberated Sahrawi lands.
All of the Secretary-General’s reports, submitted to the Security Council in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025, respectively, refer to dozens of “air and other strikes” carried out by the Royal Moroccan Army, which resulted in “civilian casualties” and “material damage.” These cases represent only what the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) was able to document.
The Polisario Front reiterates that the deliberate targeting of civilians and civilian objects constitutes a war crime according to the International Criminal Court, and is a violation of the rules of international humanitarian law applicable in international armed conflicts.
Therefore, the Moroccan occupation state must be strongly condemned and held accountable for its ongoing crimes against humanity and its violations of international humanitarian law and international law in Western Sahara. All those who have expressed deep concern about the targeting of civilians are now called to adhere to that same position in this case, because international humanitarian law must apply to everyone without exception, selectivity or double standards.
These latest Moroccan criminal acts were carried out during the visit of the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General to Western Sahara. This calculated move blatantly shows that the Moroccan occupying state intends to sabotage efforts to revive the UN-led peace process in Western Sahara and push for a greater military escalation. The Security Council cannot remain silent regarding Morocco’s destabilizing actions that threaten regional peace and security.
Please accept, Your Excellency, the highest expressions of appreciation and respect.

    Dr. Sidi Mohamed Ammar

Representative of the Polisario Front to the United Nations and coordinator with MINURSO. (SPS)
