New York (United Nations), June 11, 2026 (SPS) – Following the recent Moroccan occupation forces targeting Sahrawi civilians in the Eklibat al-Fula region and other places in the liberated Sahrawi areas and the subsequent Moroccan military escalation, Mr. Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, expressed on Wednesday deep concern about these actions that occurred at a time when Mr. Staffan de Mistura, Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General for Sahara, was present. Western, on a visit to the region.
The Deputy Spokesman for the Secretary-General added that Mr. de Mistura had also expressed his concern about these recent events and stressed that such military actions would threaten the progress made towards reaching a durable and mutually acceptable solution to the conflict.
The Moroccan occupation forces’ continued targeting of Sahrawi civilians is further evidence of the criminal behavior of the Moroccan occupying state, which has been using various types of lethal weapons, including drones, since violating the ceasefire on November 13, 2020, to kill dozens of innocent civilians, not only from Western Sahara, but also from Algeria and Mauritania, as well as nationals of other countries as they pass through the liberated Sahrawi lands.
Also, the escalation actions carried out by the Moroccan occupation forces at a time when the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General is visiting the region indicates a premeditated intention by the Moroccan occupation state to undermine the ongoing international efforts and continue its aggressive war against the Sahrawi people and push the region into more tension and instability, which requires a strict response and strong condemnation by the UN Security Council and the international community.
