As announced by the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service, in addition to rain and thunderstorms, hail is also possible in many places, mainly in Eastern Lithuania.
During the day, the wind will change direction, its gusts will reach 15-20 m/s in many places, and in some places it will strengthen to 23 m/s.
The highest temperature will reach 14-19, in Eastern Lithuania – 20-25 degrees.
The Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service also warns about the approaching storm on its Facebook page.
“The greatest probability of a very strong storm is in Vilnius, Utena and Panevėžys counties.
Due to the wind, trees may fall, their branches may break, and electricity supply may be disrupted. Short-term street flooding may occur due to heavy rains.
Recommendations: Close windows and doors tightly. Collect easily lifted items in yards, balconies and other open areas. Do not leave your car near tall trees. When outdoors, do not park under trees, near billboards and power lines, lightning rods or metal towers, avoid open areas, or be near or in bodies of water. If a storm hits while driving, do so with extra concentration, keep both hands on the steering wheel and change the speed of the car, taking into account the prevailing weather conditions on the road.
We invite you to use the “Meteo LT” weather application, where you will see the warnings issued by specialists for the area of your choice. In addition, you will be able to monitor the precipitation zones traveling through Lithuania in real time,” writes meteo.lt
On the website meteo.lt the presented map of dangerous meteorological phenomena shows that a yellow danger has been announced for almost all of Lithuania. This warning means that vulnerable objects are vulnerable and the damage can be avoided.
In three counties of the country, a higher – orange level danger has already been announced. This means that general damage is inevitable.
Vilnius, Utena and Panevėžys counties fall into the orange danger zone.
“In the second half of the day, a very strong storm is expected in many places in Eastern Lithuania: there will be thunderstorms, heavy rain in many places, a squall will arise, during which wind gusts will reach 15-20 m/s, in some places up to 25 m/s, hail is possible,” reads meteo.lt.
Clear recommendations are also provided for this zone.
“Be prepared to protect yourself and your property. If a storm is approaching, avoid leaving your home, stay indoors, stay away from windows. Unplug household appliances and do not use electrical outlets. Be prepared for possible power outages. If you are away, find a safe place, do not be in an open area, do not run, do not stand under tall trees, near billboards and power lines, metal poles, do not park cars in these places,” warns the service.
Some residents received warnings by phone
According to meteorologists, in some places the amount of precipitation may reach the criteria of a natural meteorological phenomenon, so warning messages have been sent to the mobile phones of residents of Vilnius, Utena and Panevėžys counties.
The Fire Protection and Rescue Department (PAGD) urges residents to respond responsibly to warnings and take care of their own and property safety in advance.
According to forecasts of forecasters, the storm should reach Eastern Lithuania between 2 and 9 p.m. Thunderstorms, heavy rain are expected in many areas, and wind gusts will reach 15-20 m/s, in some places – up to 25 m/s. Hail may fall in some places.
According to civil safety experts of the Fire Protection and Rescue Department, the biggest danger during storms is not only the meteorological phenomenon itself, but also careless behavior. Therefore, we urge residents not to wait for the storm to begin, but to prepare in advance for the possible effects of strong wind, hail or heavy rain.
The strongest storms will form near the Vilnius region from 2 p.m.
As storm clouds move across Lithuania on Thursday, with forecasters predicting squalls and hail, the strongest storms should begin around 2 p.m. in the Vilnius region.
“The strongest storms should form in the near future, from around 2 p.m., around the Vilnius region,” said Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service (LHMT) forecaster Paulius Starkus during a press conference held on Thursday.
“All these systems (ELTA) will eventually move to the north, northeast and then, of course, they will also reach Panevėžys and Utena counties. By the time everything finally leaves Lithuania, it may be late at night,” he noted.
According to the forecaster, it will be a bit calmer in the western part of the country on Thursday, and the residents of Vilnius, Panevėžys and Utena counties will feel the worst of the coming weather.
“A southern cyclone is moving through Lithuania, it determines the weather in the whole country. It is true that Lithuania is now, one could say, divided into two parts – eastern and western (…). On the (Western – ELTA) side, it will rain for most of the day from the very morning until the evening, heavy rain is expected in many areas (…), during the whole day there will be regions where it will rain heavily. The wind should also strengthen, especially in the coastal region, until 15-20 or even 24 m/s in the coastal area,” the forecaster said during the press conference.
“The most dangerous weather is expected on the eastern side. In the warm part of the southern cyclone, the most intense rain clouds should form. Even in the current situation, we have isolated rains with thunderstorms. It is true, for now, without major wind intensifications (…). The residents of Vilnius, Panevėžys and Utena counties should be the most alert, because it is in these regions that we are waiting for that natural meteorological phenomenon, the whole complex. Rains are also expected in many places, which will be strong. This is the whole complex, because they will be accompanied by thunderstorms, wind intensifications, there will be gusts of wind up to 15-20 m/s. (…) There is also a chance of hail,” he emphasized.
The PAGD representative urges not to panic and to follow the recommendations
Some time ago, notifications about the approaching storm were sent to a part of the Lithuanian population. After receiving them, according to the representative of the Fire Protection and Rescue Department (PAGD), Paulius Rinkevičius, it is important not to panic and follow the recommendations.
“Due to the mentioned changes in the weather today and the values that can reach the natural level, a warning message was sent to the residents of Vilnius, Panevėžys and Utena counties. After receiving this message, it is important not to panic, not to get lost (…). If we are at home, let’s close the windows, roofs. If we have a courtyard, a terrace, a balcony and there are unsecured things, let’s fix them. If we have a car, let’s not park it under trees, under electric wires. It’s a very important moment to take care of your loved ones. If there are people who can’t take care of themselves, the people closest to them should take care of them,” said P. Rinkevičius.
“It is necessary to charge mobile phones (…), because during a storm, the power supply may be interrupted for some time, so it is important that the devices are charged (…). If we are in a safe room and we have scheduled meetings, let’s postpone them or cancel them altogether, postpone them, let’s carry them out when the danger is no longer there,” said the PAGD representative.
