The main goal is to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident and to assess its impact on the security of Romania and the Black Sea region. Measures to strengthen maritime surveillance, electronic tracking and rapid response capabilities along the Romanian coast are also expected to be discussed.
Ukraine admitted that the drone was its own
The Ukrainian Navy said the unmanned aerial vehicle belonged to its forces and was on a combat mission in the Black Sea.
According to the Ukrainian side, the drone came under the influence of Russian electronic warfare, which led to the loss of navigation and communication. The craft then veered off course, reached the Romanian coast and exploded in the Port of Constanta area.
Following the incident, Romanian security services, coast guard and military units cordoned off the area. There are no reports of casualties.
The Prosecutor’s Office at the Court of Appeal in Constanta has launched an official investigation.
Another incident near NATO’s borders
The case is another incident related to the war against Ukraine, which affects the territory of Romania – a NATO member and a country with a long land and sea border with Ukraine.
Just a week ago, Romanian authorities announced that a Russian drone had entered Romanian airspace during an attack on Ukrainian Danube ports. The device crashed into a residential building in the city of Galats and caused a fire and explosion.
Since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, Romania has recorded numerous cases of downed drones, missile fragments and other military debris on its territory.
The latest incident heightens concerns in Bucharest about security on NATO’s eastern flank and puts new emphasis on the need for better early warning and surveillance systems in the Black Sea.
