One hundred years after her birth, the community of Roeser remembers Elisabeth Kox-Risch. With a homage on June 10th, she honors a woman who was one of the defining figures of the resistance against nuclear power in Luxembourg and who had a decisive influence on the country’s environmental movement.
Elisabeth Kox-Risch, born in Remich in 1926, became best known for her work against the nuclear power plant in Remerschen that was planned in the 1970s. As chairwoman of the “Museldall” citizens’ initiative, she was one of the driving forces of the protest. Initially with the CSV, she later became involved in the environmental movement and the Green Party. To this day, her name remains closely linked to the fight against nuclear power and the beginnings of political ecology in Luxembourg.
The fact that the homage takes place in Roeser of all places has a special background. The community has been committed to opposing nuclear power and particularly the Cattenom nuclear power plant for decades. “Since the beginning of the 1980s, the municipality of Roeser has always been there when protests were made against the Cattenom nuclear power plant or when legal action was taken against it,” explains Mayor Tom Jungs. This commitment also motivated him to revive the alliance of communities against nuclear energy last year.
Homage
The event starts on Wednesday, June 10th in Peppingen. Elisabeth-Kox-Risch-Straße will be officially inaugurated there at 6:30 p.m. The participants then return to Roeser, where the conference will take place at 7 p.m. in the ballroom of the town hall.
Chantal Gary talks about her grandmother’s life and legacy. Historian Sacha Pulli sheds light on the history of the failed nuclear power plant project in Remerschen between 1973 and 1979. Raymond Becker, honorary alderman of the municipality of Roeser, recalls the decades-long resistance to the Cattenom nuclear power plant. The event concludes with a greeting from Mayor Tom Jungs.
With the homage, it is said, the community wants to remember a woman who had the courage to swim against the tide and stand up for her convictions with great perseverance.
