Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has proposed an international pause in the construction of the most powerful artificial intelligence systems because the latest ones are beginning to show signs that humans can lose control of them.
Based in San Francisco, Anthropic is best known for creating the artificial intelligence model Claude.
In its report, the company says that it would “probably be a good thing” if the development of the latest artificial intelligence technology could be slowed down internationally. It warned, however, that as soon as one company quit, its competitors would simply overtake it.
It is unlikely to have a good resonance
“We think it would be good for the world if there was an option to slow down or temporarily stop the development of the most powerful artificial intelligence so that social systems and research on synchronization can keep up with the advancement of the technology,” the company said.
That would mean a number of large AI companies in multiple countries, mostly in the US and China, would all have to agree to this at the same time, Anthropic also said.
This idea is unlikely to resonate well with the likes of Elon Musk, whose artificial intelligence company xAI is part of SpaceX, which he also owns. The latter will be listed on the stock market in the near future, which will bring Musk even more wealth.
