Just 30 minutes after the truce between Israel and Hezbollah took effect, at least four large Israeli airstrikes have already been reported across South Lebanon, reports Al Jazeeraalso posting a video from the field.
According to initial press reports, the Israelis hit several locations, including Nabatieh, Kfar Tebnit and Kfar Sir, while in another area Israeli artillery shelled a separate target.
It is about at least 12 Israeli airstrikes and continuous artillery shelling.
As Al Jazeera reports, the situation on the ground does not resemble a ceasefire at all, as renewed hostilities began almost immediately after the agreement was announced.
Israel and Hezbollah agreed to end hostilities after Qatar, the US and Iran brokered a ceasefire deal.
The purpose of the truce was to prevent the escalation in Lebanon from hindering the bigger picture, that is, the temporary agreement between the US and Iran from growing into a permanent peace agreement for the region.
According to AFP, the agreement was reached after a dangerous escalation of fighting, which threatened to jeopardize negotiations to end the war with Iran and reopen the Strait of Hormuz to world maritime traffic.
According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, since midnight today, the Israeli army has killed at least 47 people and wounded another 97 in attacks on Lebanon.
Shortly before the ceasefire took effect, a senior US official said the agreement had been brokered by the US and Qatar, with the help of Iran.
“We understand that, following the exchange of fire earlier today, Israel and Hezbollah are now in a ceasefire,” the official told Reuters.
