The former director of the Oncology Clinic, Nikola Vasev, and the former organizational director Nehad Nuhi have been released from detention after the Basic Criminal Court Skopje accepted the offered guarantee secured by a real estate mortgage and prescribed precautionary measures.
As the Court announced, the decision was made following the proposal of the defense and after receiving a positive opinion from the competent Public Prosecutor’s Office.
For Vasev, a guarantee in the amount of 183,981 euros was accepted, while for Nuhi the guarantee is 348,049 euros. In both cases it is about real estate mortgaged in favor of the state.
In addition to the guarantee, the two defendants were given precautionary measures, including a ban on leaving their residence on the territory of Skopje, an obligation to appear in court once a month, as well as a temporary confiscation of their travel documents and a ban on issuing new travel documents.
The Criminal Court points out that the fact that the detention measure can last until July 18, 2026 at the latest was taken into account when making the decision. Since the Prosecutor’s Office waived the right to appeal, and the offered mortgages were already entered in the Cadastre, the decisions became final and the defendants were released.
Vasev and Nuhi are accused in the “Oncology 2” case, in which, according to the indictment, in the period from 2018 to 2022, they illegally procured drugs through fictitious tenders and appropriated part of the therapy, whereby the state budget was damaged by almost 36 million euros.
In parallel, the “Oncology 1” case is being conducted, in which Vasev and two other doctors are accused of negligent treatment of patients.
In February of this year, the Court rejected the request to cancel the detention, although property guarantees were offered, but now, after the positive opinion of the Prosecutor’s Office and the fulfillment of the legal conditions, the Criminal Council made a different decision.
