He met today with his Greek colleague Jorgos Gerapetritis during his official visit to Montenegro, which, as announced by the Montenegrin Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MVP), confirmed the high level of bilateral relations and partnership cooperation between the two countries.
Ibrahimović thanked Greece for its continuous and strong support for Montenegro’s European path, emphasizing clear goals – closing all negotiation chapters by the end of the year and full membership in the EU by 2028.
“I believe that through the example of Montenegro, the enlargement policy can once again confirm not only its importance, but also its strength and credibility as one of the key policies of the EU,” said Ibrahimović.
He stated that while the Thessaloniki Summit in 2003 laid the foundations for the European perspective of the region, the recent Summit in Tivat sent a clear message that the time has come to turn that vision into reality, with Montenegro as the first proof of the success of the enlargement policy.
“Too much time passed from Thessaloniki to Tivat and numerous opportunities were missed, and that is why the Summit in Tivat symbolizes the joint determination to finally translate the promise given to the region into concrete results and a new European reality that Montenegro will not give up on,” said Ibrahimović.
It is stated that Gerapetritis praised the achieved results and commitment of Montenegro to the European agenda.
He said that Greece welcomes the progress and efforts made by Montenegro on its way to the EU, as well as the reforms that are being implemented.
Gerapetritis also congratulated on the complete alignment with the common foreign and security policy of the EU, which, he added, is a rarity and a clear indicator of Montenegro’s strategic orientation.
“Greece’s support for the European perspective of Montenegro is unwavering. We expect that the negotiations will soon result in membership, with the desire to welcome Montenegro during our presidency next year,” said Gerapetritis.
In the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is stated that the ministers exchanged opinions on current regional and international issues.
As it was added, it was pointed out that, as allies in NATO, Montenegro and Greece share responsibility for preserving peace, stability and security.
“It was concluded that the traditional friendship between Montenegro and Greece is gaining new dynamics through the strengthening of economic cooperation, the direct air connection between Podgorica and Athens, and Montenegro’s upcoming chairmanship of the Berlin Process and the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe,” the statement said.
