The United Workers Party (UWP) has expressed gratitude to outgoing Parliamentary Representative for the Roseau North Constituency, Honourable Miriam Blanchard, following her resignation from Parliament due to medical reasons.
An official announcement was made on Friday, June 12, 2026, confirming Blanchard’s departure after her June 9 letter formally advised of her decision to step down.
Political Leader of the UWP, Dr. Thomson Fontaine, acknowledged Blanchard’s contributions both as a government minister and as a parliamentary representative. “The United Workers’ Party thanks Honorable Blanchard for her valuable contribution to our country, both as a government minister and as a parliamentary representative. And I, on behalf of the United Workers’ Party, wish Honorable Blanchard well on her path to full recovery,” Fontaine stated.
Dr. Fontaine noted that Blanchard’s resignation opens the way for a by-election in Roseau North, a constituency he described as a strong support base for the UWP. He indicated that the by-election should take place within three months and assured constituents that the party is prepared to contest.
“As we have previously stated, our party stands ready to offer the people of Dominica a government that is committed to shared prosperity for all Dominicans,” Fontaine said. “We are well prepared to participate in the by-election and, in fact, in a general election after the completion of the electoral reform process.”
Blanchard has been a prominent figure in Dominican politics for nearly a decade, serving in Cabinet with responsibility for portfolios including infrastructure, planning, economic development, labour, public service reform, and small business development. She played a key role in national recovery efforts following Tropical Storm Erika and contributed to several development initiatives during her tenure.
