A group of students from the University of San Carlos de Guatemala (Usac) demonstrated this Friday, June 5, in front of the Constitutional Court (CC) building, in rejection of the resolutions issued that favor the re-election of Walter Mazariegos as rector.
During the day of protest, some students chained themselves at the entrance to the CC in rejection of Mazariegos, whose re-election has been questioned by social and academic groups for alleged fraud.
The protesters burned tires and carried banners rejecting the resolutions related to the case of the rector of USAC.
The Human Rights Ombudsman’s Office (PDH) reported that a mediation team carried out documentation and verification tasks during the demonstration.
According to the PDH, a group of people who identified themselves as students from that university and called themselves “GT Resistance” participated in the protest.
The entity stressed that its presence had the objective of observing the development of the demonstration, verifying respect for the human rights of the people involved and documenting the situation.

The situation became tense and a group of agents from the National Civil Riot Police arrived as a preventive measure.
On June 3, it was reported that authorities from the Usac and the university opposition group Usac-Dire They received notifications about rejected legal actions in the framework of the election of the university rector.
The re-election of the rector gave rise to the presentation of several legal actions before courts and appeals chambers. Some even reached the CC; However, the majority have already been rejected in favor of Mazariegos.
