PARAMARIBO — After receiving information that there were suspected victims of human trafficking and smuggling on Kashmir Street, employees of the Trafficking in Persons (TiP) department, with the support of the Paramaribo Regional Assistance Team and the Intelligence Services, raided the home on Tuesday. Three suspects – two Cuban women and a Surinamese – were arrested. Several victims were found in the building. They have been transferred to the TiP shelter for shelter and further guidance, the Suriname Police Force reported on its website on Thursday (today).
The victims have stated that they were taken to Suriname and then forced to perform sex work in a nightclub in Paramaribo-Noord to pay off an imposed debt. They further indicated that their freedom of movement was restricted and that they had to hand over all proceeds from the work they performed. After consultation with the Public Prosecution Service, the three suspects have been taken into custody in the interest of the further criminal investigation, which is still ongoing.
