Team Unity Dominica (TUD) candidate for the Paix Bouche and Calibishie Constituency, Christine Dupuis-Dubique, is calling for a fairer system of support for public transport operators and fishers, arguing that both groups deserve greater assistance to strengthen their livelihoods.
Speaking at a recent TUD press conference, Dupuis-Dubique said she would advocate for a transparent duty-free concession programme for registered public transport operators that rewards compliance with industry standards.
“I’m advocating for a fair and transparent duty-free concession program for registered public transport operators linked to proper licensing, insurance, roadworthiness and passenger safety,” she said.
She also said the country’s boat owners and fishers should receive similar support to help them grow their businesses.
“Our boat owners and fishers deserve the same level of support. And I will advocate for improved access to affordable financing, together with appropriate concessions for the resources and tools they need to operate safely and build successful, sustainable building.”
In addition to financial assistance, Dupuis-Dubique stressed the importance of expanding training opportunities within the constituency. She said residents should have access to programmes in maritime safety, navigation, engine maintenance, hospitality and business management without having to travel outside their communities.
“Training in maritime safety, navigation, engine maintenance, hospitality, and business management should be available right here in the Bense, Anse De Mai, Anse Soldat, Calibishie and Paix Bouche constituency,” she stated.
Dupuis-Dubique said the constituency’s longstanding connection to the sea and agriculture provides a strong foundation for economic growth and should be supported through targeted investment and skills development.
She also argued that residents should benefit directly from projects carried out in their communities.
“So when work is being carried out in your communities, qualified people from within the constituency should be given a fair opportunity to benefit,” she stated.
