Washington, United States
The American president, donald trumpappealed this Friday to senior voters in Florida to “go out and vote in the midterm elections” next November, amid their decline in popularity due to the rising cost of living and the conflict in Iran.
“I guess everyone has a big advantage, but remember: make the difference so big that it’s undeniable. You have to go out and vote. Don’t take anything for granted,” the president said during a rally in The Villages (Florida), one of the largest retirement communities in the country.
Trump again made his accusations of rigging in the 2020 presidential election, which he lost to Joe Biden, and defended the SAVE America Act, a bill that tightens voting requirements.
“All voters must present identification, all voters must have proof of citizenship and there will be no vote by mail, except for illness, disability, military deployment or travel,” said the president, while the proposal remains blocked in the Senate.
Civil associations denounced that if the measure comes into force, it would prevent millions of people from exercising their right to vote in the next elections, especially married or divorced women, minorities or rural communities.
This rally coincided with one of Trump’s lowest moments of popularity as president, weighed down by problems such as inflation, the conflict in Iran or immigration.
A Pew Research Center survey published this Friday put Trump’s approval rating at 34%, and indicated that the president had fallen in all metrics since winning the 2024 election.
The event in Florida was Trump’s first public event since he was the target of an assassination attempt last week during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, DC.
The incident took place when the shooter tried to break into the lounge of the Washington Hilton hotel, where the first lady, Melania Trump, was also present; Vice President, JD Vance; the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson; and several members of the Government.
Secret Service agents responded with five shots and Allen fell to the ground and was subdued, although he did not suffer any gunshot wounds.
The incident left no victims, although the shots caused the evacuation of Trump and the rest of the authorities, in addition to unleashing panic among some of the attendees. EFE
